Up for sale is a beautiful, highly detailed, bespoke rectangular mother-of-pearl gaming counter. Hand-carved by skilled artisans in Canton, China, circa 1810, this luxury export item was custom-commissioned for the British market via the East India Company.What makes this individual piece exceptional is its extensive personal heraldry and ironclad provenance, complete with the original documentation and Certificate of Authenticity signed by the late foremost gaming counter expert Bill Neal in August 2008.
Design Details:* The Obverse (Front Side): Features a central heraldic crest of a moorcock (black grouse) representing the Moore Family. Above the crest, a scroll reads the Latin motto \"PIGNUS AMICITIAE\" (\"A pledge of friendship\"). Below sits a highly stylized custom monogram reading \"NM\". The central medallion is flanked by two excellently drawn floral panels.* The Reverse (Back Side): Features a finely engraved, crisp traditional Chinese courtyard character scene depicting a figure beside architecture, framed by elegant floral sprays.* The Border: A crisp, classic geometric lattice and starburst border frame with a clean, serrated \"sawtooth\" edge finish.Dimensions:* Approximately 2.4 inches (61mm) in length by 0.9 inches (23mm) in width.Condition:Excellent antique condition with incredibly deep, crisp lines that flash beautifully under candlelight. The iridescence of the natural nacre remains highly vibrant. No notable chips or fractures. Includes the full, two-sided written certificate of authenticity packet from Bill Neal.
