Description

1651 Henning Arnisaeus – Doctrina Politica – Elzevir Edition – Antique Vellum Binding with Engraved Frontispiece

An attractive seventeenth-century Latin edition of Doctrina Politica by Henning Arnisaeus (c. 1575–1636), a German physician, philosopher and influential early modern political theorist. Published in Amsterdam by the celebrated Elzevir printing house in 1651, this volume is an excellent example of early European political literature.

Arnisaeus was an important figure in the development of early modern political thought. His writings explore sovereignty, monarchy, constitutional authority and the organization of civil government. His work reflects the intellectual and political debates of seventeenth-century Europe, particularly the relationship between rulers, the state and the exercise of political power.

Notable features

* Original seventeenth-century edition: Published in 1651, during the period of the Dutch Republic’s flourishing book trade.

* Elzevir imprint: Produced by one of Europe’s most celebrated early modern printing dynasties, renowned for its scholarly publications and compact, finely printed books.

* Engraved frontispiece: An attractive period engraving that adds considerable visual and historical interest.

* Vellum binding: Bound in traditional vellum, characteristic of many seventeenth-century European scholarly works.

* Latin text: An original-language work of early modern political philosophy.

Antique condition consistent with a volume approaching 375 years of age. The vellum exhibits age-related discoloration, surface soiling and wear. Interior pages display expected toning and occasional staining. A darker stain is visible inside the front cover. The engraved frontispiece is present.

Completeness has not been independently verified. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Historical significance

This volume brings together three desirable features of antiquarian book collecting: an influential early modern political philosopher, a seventeenth-century Elzevir imprint and traditional vellum binding. Its engraved frontispiece adds further appeal.

An interesting addition to a collection of early printed books, European political philosophy, seventeenth-century history or Dutch printing.
