Antique Holy Bible, King James Version. Oxford S.S. (Sunday School) Teacher's Edition, Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press. Printed on Oxford India paper, silk sewed, with the Helps section, concordance, and color maps. Title page foot reads "Minion 8vo. Thin" and "[Oxford Facsimile Series, No. 2a]" — type size and format code, not an edition number.
DATING
The book itself carries no printed date, which is normal for Frowde-era Oxford Bibles. The date comes from the presentation inscription on the front endpaper, which reads:
Geo. W. Ham
46 Thompson St.
Rochester, N.Y.
from his Mother
1888
The New York imprint address on the title page is 42 Bleecker Street, which is consistent with a printing of this period. The 1888 date reflects when the Bible was given, not a printed publication date.
BINDING
Black pebble-grain leather over flexible boards, blind-ruled border, raised spine bands, gilt spine lettering, gilt page edges.
CONDITION — read this carefully
The leather is rough. The spine is heavily flaked and rubbed down to the orange underlayer across most of the bands. Corners are worn through. The front board edge is chipped. The title leaf has a tear at the top and heavy creasing. Gilt edges are largely intact and the text block appears tight and complete.
