Beautiful antique Ottoman-style jelek, or traditional sleeveless vest, dating approximately to the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1890–1910.
Constructed from deep black silk velvet and richly ornamented with elaborate metallic cord soutache/passementerie in repeating scrolling and foliate motifs. The decoration follows the open front, broad collar and shoulders, lower hem, and continues across the back.
This type of short, highly decorated sleeveless garment belongs to the Ottoman/Balkan tradition of embroidered jeleks and related regional waistcoats. The form and extensive metallic cordwork are consistent with garments produced within the broader Ottoman cultural sphere around the turn of the 20th century.
Vest proportions are quite small: chest measures 32 inches and shoulder to hem is 13 1/2 inches long. The vest is fully lined in silk. Interestingly, there are two small interior fabric tabs with worked buttonholes sewn into the lining. Their original function is uncertain, although they appear to have served as attachment or anchoring points.
Good antique condition. The metallic cordwork has areas of looseness, breaks and losses, including loose and hanging loops/threads around portions of the edges and hem. The velvet shows very minor surface wear, and a few marks consistent with age. Lining is in good condition overall with a couple of small tears.
A particularly striking surviving example of Ottoman/Balkan traditional dress, with beautiful aged metallic passementerie against the black velvet.
