A rare example of an antique Hmong / Miao hairpin . There are several related tribes and they all lived in the mountains of S. E. Asia .This hairpin is 12 inches long and weighs 97 grams . The hairpin is made from 1 sheet of solid high quality silver .The seam can be seen in the photos , it goes all the way down one of the four sides . The cap to the hairpin fits perfectly to this day ! It was excellently crafted and fits tight , but not too tight , no matter what side of the cap is inserted . The story is that opium , or something of value was often hidden in this chamber . The Hmong / Mien were famous for their skill in working silver . There is very little old silver for sale nowadays in S.E. Asia .
