This is a Hardy Altex No. 1 Mark V fixed-spool spinning reel, made by Hardy Brothers of Alnwick, Northumberland, probably between about 1945 and 1950. The circular side plate is crisply engraved with the Royal Appointment arms, the Hardy Alnwick name, the Altex registered trademark, and its No. 1 Mark V designation; the reel foot records British patent numbers 373786, 380939, and 402597, together with serial number 623496.Hardy introduced the Altex range during the great expansion of modern spinning tackle in the 1930s. Unlike a traditional centrepin reel, its fixed spool let anglers cast light lures and baits more easily, helping popularize spinning for trout, salmon, pike, and sea fish in Britain after the Second World War. The folding crank and early mechanical bail mechanism are characteristic practical refinements of the model.Altex reels were technically ambitious: their spool, bail, and oscillating line-lay system required close-tolerance machining so that line would be retrieved evenly rather than piling at one end. This reel appears complete, retaining the original spool, folding handle, bail components, and legible Hardy and patent engravings. This item is sold as is but appears in good condition and in working order, with normal wear consistent with its age.
