Michael Pexenfelder – Concionator Historicus, Part II – Large Antiquarian Latin Volume
An impressive, oversized antiquarian Latin volume of Concionator Historicus, Part II, by Michael Pexenfelder, a seventeenth-century German Jesuit scholar and author.
The printed text appears to date from the seventeenth century, while the book has been rebound in a later hardcover binding. The exact printing date remains unconfirmed. Its early-style typography, elaborate decorative initials, ornamental flourishes and densely printed double-column Latin text are characteristic of early modern European religious publications.
This substantial volume contains more than 800 pages of historical narratives, unusual events, moral exempla and theological instruction intended for Catholic preaching and religious education.
The book measures approximately 13¾ × 10 inches and features attractive marbled paper boards with a black cloth spine and gilt lettering. The later binding reflects its subsequent institutional use.
Historical Provenance
The volume retains its original institutional bookplate identifying the library of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), associated with St. James in Baltimore, Maryland. Additional library stamps provide evidence of its history within an American Catholic religious institution.
Condition
The later hardcover binding exhibits substantial age-related wear, including spine deterioration, weakened hinges, rubbing and worn corners. The interior pages remain legible, with age-related toning, occasional spotting and handling wear. The title page and concluding index are present.
An imposing large-format antiquarian volume of particular interest to collectors of early Latin printing, Jesuit literature, Catholic theology and historical religious books.
