A beautiful copy of the very first book designed by Alvin Lustig.
Lustig did the binding design and, most importantly, the headpiece color abstract illustrations which were made using metal type. The illustrations were novel and wholly original. They straddle Art Deco and mid century modern design aesthetics.
1938, first edition. One of 250 copies. SIGNED by the author on the colophon. Hardcover in dust jacket with paper title label. 8 x 5.25 inches. 17 pages.
Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. Sound binding; clean contents; minor bumping to the spine ends and lower edge of the boards. DJ slightly faded along the spine; minor chipping to spine ends.
A slight but extremely important book for many reasons, and a pinnacle of early California design. This book was done 2 years before The Ghost in the Underblows, his other masterpiece published by Ward Ritchie Press.
Ritchie once said of Lustig\'s type illustrations that \"He created a new art form, virile, abstract and colorful.\"
