Large original 1969 color lithograph by Swiss artist Fritz Rudolf Hug, depicting a powerful antlered stag rendered in the expressive, energetic style for which Hug\'s animal subjects are particularly well known.
The stag fills nearly the entire composition, emerging from a richly layered background of burnt orange, rust, ochre, black, blue, and white. Vigorous linear drawing, overlapping areas of color, splattered pigment, and loosely worked passages give the image a striking painterly quality and considerable movement.
This is an original limited-edition lithograph, hand-numbered 104/175 in pencil at the lower left and hand-signed and dated “Fritz Hug 69” in pencil at the lower right.
The large sheet retains its naturally irregular deckled edges and has a substantial, tactile quality that complements Hug\'s expressive printmaking technique.
About the Artist
Fritz Rudolf Hug (1921–1989) was a Swiss painter and printmaker particularly recognized for his depictions of animals and wildlife. His work combines close observation of animal anatomy and behavior with energetic, expressive mark-making.
Hug produced numerous lithographs during the mid-20th century featuring wildlife, birds, horses, dogs, and other animals. His prints are especially recognizable for their bold line work, layered colors, and immediate, almost gestural treatment of their subjects.
Condition
Very good vintage condition overall with strong color and image quality; light edge toning, some edge wear, and a small slit in the right margin are present.
There is light toning along portions of the outer margins and edge wear, most noticeable along the lower-left edge where the paper shows localized roughness and small losses associated with the irregular edge. A small horizontal slit is present in the right margin and is shown clearly in the close-up photograph. Additional light age and handling wear is visible along portions of the outer edges.
The printed image remains strong and visually impressive.
Unframed vintage print stored flat for many years and never framed or displayed.
